Group of Food Bioprocesses and Biorefineries

Main Research Focus

Development of integrated bioprocesses and biorefineries utilising renewable resources including food processing and agro-industrial waste and by-product streams.

  • Fractionation and bioconversion of renewable resources is implemented through integration of physical, chemical and biological processing for the production of value-added fractions (e.g. protein isolates, antioxidants), microbial oil using oleaginous microorganisms, platform chemicals (e.g. succinic acid, 1,3-propanediol, 2,3-butanediol) and biopolymers (e.g. polyhydroxyalkanoates).
  • Solid state bioconversions are optimised for enzyme consortia production with various applications (e.g. fermentation media production, purification of intracellular products).
  • Application of computer-aided design, modelling and costing studies to evaluate and optimise biorefinery concepts and microbial bioprocesses.
