Dr. Violetta Constantinou

Professor of Organic Chemistry

Prof. Violetta Constantinou recieved her B.Sc. degree from the Department of Chemistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In 1990 she recieved her Ph.D. from the Agricultural University of Athens, majoring in the synthesis of aminoglycoside antibiotics and aminosugars, under the supervision of Prof. M. P. Georgiadis. In 1990 and during the summer months of 1991, 1993, 1994 and 1995 she joined the group of Prof. W. A. Gibbons, at the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biological Chemistry of the School of Pharmacy of the University of London, as a postdoctoral fellow working on the synthesis of sphingosine and ceramide analogues, the isolation of lipids from cells, tissues and body fluids and she was trained in modern methods of spectroscopy and purification of organic compounds. The summer of 2000 she was visiting professor of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the University of San Diego (UCSD) at the United States.

Her current research interests concern the synthesis and study of lipolytic enzymes synthetic inhibitors, the synthesis of aminoacids, sugar and lipid bioactive derivatives and the isolation of lipids from natural sources.
