CAB INTERNATIONAL

A brief description

CAB INTERNATIONAL (CABI) is a treaty-level, international, intergovernmental organisation established in 1928. It is owned by its member governments, which currently number 40. The Organization is largely self-supporting financially, through the sale of information products and services, projects, contracted research, consultancies, training courses and other sources of income. CABI is dedicated to improving human welfare worldwide through the dissemination, application and generation of scientific knowledge in support of sustainable development, with emphasis on agriculture, forestry, human health and the management of natural resources, and with particular attention to the needs of developing countries. More information is available about CAB INTERNATIONAL's pest management activities, and about the wider scope of CABI's activities, of which a part is our role as a publisher of a wide range of books, journals and electronic products.

CABI and Pest Management

Publishing and Information

Agricultural and Bioscience Information provision is centred on CABI Information, located at CABI Headquarters in Wallingford, which is an international centre for the collection, organization and dissemination of information on agriculture, forestry, the management of natural resources, and related sciences including human nutrition and health.
This of course includes pest management information. Its central function is the compilation of bibliographic databases (pest management information is included in CAB ABSTRACTS) from the world’s scientific and technical literature and is also a centre of excellence in information science, with a programme of innovation, project development and research. CABI’s Publishing Division publishes and markets worldwide a range of printed and electronic products in all agricultural disciplines including pest management.
The pest management products are predominantly outputs from CAB ABSTRACTS, as printed journals, CD-ROM products, magnetic tapes and floppy disk products. However, the range of products also includes primary journals, newsletters, books and various novel electronic publications.
PEST CABWeb provides access to 6 of our key pest management information products and includes details of our full range of publishing activities.

Biological Science and Services

CAB INTERNATIONAL’s Biological Science and Services are centred on its two sites:

The pest management services provided include:

  • authoritative identification of crop pests, pathogens, nematodes and parasitic helminths
  • survey and diagnosis of plant health problems
  • biocontrol of invasive pest species in conservation areas
  • support for integrated pest management and biological control in agriculture and forestry
  • biosystematic research on arthropods, microorganisms, nematodes and helminths, including pests and beneficial organisms
  • training, consultancy and advice in all these areas.

Training

Several hundred scientists from many different countries are trained by CAB INTERNATIONAL (CABI) every year, and the Organization is committed to the spread of scientific and technical education of the highest standard.
Students and visiting scientists benefit from the expertise and excellent technical facilities available in CABI Centre or the Bioscience Centres and take their experience and skills back to their home countries and institutions.
CAB INTERNATIONAL collaborates with other agencies to make its specialist expertise available to support institutional development and related activitites. Listings of our courses are available for all.
We are of course always pleased to receive enquiries concerning our courses: members of PEST CABWeb can access more detailed information, including extracts from some of our training manuals.

Development

The Information for Development (IFD) Programme is the focus for CABI’s information services for developing countries.
Working in partnership with other bodies, the Programme executes information projects, assists with the design and planning of sustainable library and information systems and with the securing of external finance to strengthen such systems, encourages the inclusion of information support in development projects and research programmes, provides relevant training and applies new technologies, tools and information transfer/delivery systems appropriate to developing country needs.
