SINGLE: Whisky from one (single) distillery.

MALT: Grain (usually barley) that has been steeped in water, partially sprouted, and dried to render in soluble.

SCOTCH: Whisky made (distilled and matured) exclusively in Scotland. (Internationally protected term)

WHISKY: A grain-based distillate traditionally made in Scotland and Ireland (whiskey), but also elsewhere in the world (e.g. North America, Japan).

Single Malt Whisky: Whisky from a single distillery (several different casks or production batches are usually used, otherwise it’s a Single Cask or Single Barrel malt), made using barley malt in a batch process, in a still shaped like a kettle or cooking pot.

Vatted Whisky: A blend of single malts from different distilleries.

Grain Whisky: Whisky made using unmalted barley, wheat or maize, produced as a continuous process in a column still.

Blended Whisky: Whisky that contains a variable proportion of blended malt and grain whiskies, commonly about 40% malt / 60% grain. A good quality blend may contain more than 40% malt, a cheap one much less.
