This report is a summary of 200 pages of data from the eight Hortimed countries: Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, Spain (Almeria region only which is about 60% from the protected horticultural area in Spain), Israel, Netherlands, Italy and Palestinian Authority. In order to collect all these data, a questionnaire was prepared on a spreadsheet to facilitate the estimation and to automate the outcome in case of data updating late on. One sheet was devoted for each country to fill in their own data.
Data collected included five crops, namely: tomato, cucumber, pepper, melon and roses. Type of protection, heating (heated or not heated), circulation system (closed or open) and growing system (soil or soilless) were the main categories under each crop.
Available data are crop area, yield per hectare, amount of water used per hectare, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium used per hectare and percentage of water sources divided into three salinity levels. Water use efficiency (kg yield / m3 water), fertilizer use efficiency (kg yield / g N or P or K) have been automatically estimated for each category under each crop.
The objective of this work is to determine the environmental impact for the five selected protected horticultural crops under different root media and other growing systems.
