Dr. Christos Olympios is Emeritus Professor of the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA). He was the founder and Director of the Vegetable Production Laboratory from its establishment in 1982 until his retirement (2009). He has been president of the Department of Horticulture and Vice Rector of the University for two consecutive periods of office and offered his services from various others university positions. For more than 50 years he has been engaged in research and teaching about production of vegetables, under cover or in the open fields, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

During his career he has been appointed by the International Organizations FAO, UNIDO, CIPA, as international expert on vegetable production to various Countries (Egypt, Jordan Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Pakistan, Mauritius, Georgia, etc.), to advice research Institutes and Governments on research and general policies on cultivation and production of vegetables. Also during his career he was given the opportunity to co-operate with foreign Universities, Research Institutes and International Organizations and to teach for several years, apart from the AUA, to the University of Thessaly, the Technological University of Cyprus, the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute etc. He has supervised a large number of undergraduate, postgraduate (MSc) and Doctoral (PhD) students and  guided  them in preparing their theses.

Prof. Olympios took part as a speaker in FAO, UNIDO, CIPA, conferences in Lisbon, Mexico, Cairo, Pakistan, and as a Key-note speaker, or for presenting research papers, in International and National conferences on subjects related to  production of vegetables, both in the open fields and in greenhouses, and on the application of plastics in agriculture.  He has been invited in Brussels as scientific evaluator of research proposals to be funded by EU. Similarly, he has been evaluator of National proposals and scientific responsible of research projects financed by the EU or by National funds.

He is the author or co-author of more than 100 scientific papers published in international journals, articles in magazines and newspapers, and reports in publications of International Organizations. He has given interviews in television, radio and newspapers. He has written and published three text books and several teaching notes on vegetable production to be used by the students.

His interests are centered on the physiology of vegetable crops, fruit setting, resistance of vegetables to salinity, the grafting of vegetables to resistant rootstocks, hydroponics, introduction of new technologies in the cultivation of vegetables, seedless watermelons, potato seed production, etc. In general he is expert on the cultivation and production of vegetables in the open fields and under protected cultivation (greenhouses, net houses, walk-in tunnels, low tunnels, etc.). Also, he is engaged with the biological (organic) production of vegetables.

He is a member of various National and International Scientific Organizations and he has been awarded National and International Awards and Distinctions.
