PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR IN RESEARCH PROJECTS

1. Evaluation of different types of calcined magnesites as feed supplement in small ruminants (30/05/14 – 28/02/15). Funding source: TERNAMAG SA (Private sector).

AUA budget: 12,195.00 Euro.

Project description: The objectives of this study were to determine: (a) the particle size distribution of four MgO supplements with different chemical composition and their both in vitro and in vivo solubility and (b) their apparent bioavailability.

Role: In this project I coordinated both the experimental and financial part of the study from the proposal to deliverables’ submission.

2. Evaluation of two products (ΤΙΜΕΤ and ΜΕCOVIT) as feed supplements in dairy sheep. (01/11/13 – 1/09/14). Funding source: NUEVO (Private sector).

AUA budget: 7,380.00 Euro.

Project description: This study investigated the effects of dietary inclusion of rumen-protected methionine alone or in combination with rumen-protected choline and betaine on: milk yield, chemical composition and fatty acids profile and blood plasma glutathione transferase activity of per parturient ewes.

Role: In this project I coordinated both the experimental and financial part of the study from the proposal to deliverables’ submission.

3. Dietary supplementation of dairy sheep with Lysigem and/or Metasmart products (01/12/2016 – 30/10/2017). Funding source: KEMIN (Private sector).

AUA budget: 16,555.00 Euro.

Project description: This study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with rumen protected methionine or lysine, as well as with a combination of these AAs in two different proportions, on (a) milk yield, chemical composition, fatty acid profile, (b) antioxidants enzymes activities in blood and milk c) the total antioxidant capacity and oxidative stress indicators in both blood plasma and milk of early lactating ewes. Additionally, the effect of dietary AAs was also assessed on the gene expression of proinflammatory biomarkers in blood monocytes and neutrophils.

Role: In this project I coordinated both the experimental and financial part of the study from the proposal to deliverables’ submission. Also, I was guiding my research team in the optimization and validation of analytical methods.

4. YoGArt: Yogurt of Greece produced with a novel Algae Ration. Funding source: Operational Program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship & Innovation” (EPAnEK) (7/2020-7/2023), (Coordinator of the Project).

AUA budget: 317,878.00 Euro (total budget: 513,343.40 Euro)

New positions for young researchers: 4 (149.213,00 euro)

Project description: The purpose of this research project is the dietary inclusion of autotrophic microalgae, rich in EPA, in combination with a heterotrophic one, rich in DHA and DPA fatty acids in dairy sheep. The goal of this nutritional treatment is the production of yogurt with at least 40mg/100 g combined EPA and DHA content in order to label it as «DHA+EPA enriched», according to current policy. This innovative product will be commercialized as a functional food and will be characterized by high nutritional and economic value. Furthermore, the impact of microalgae dietary inclusion in ewes’ diet on carbon footprint of milk production process will be also assessed.

Role: In this project I led the consortium engagement, proposal drafting, submission and beneficiaries’ credentials documentation. After the project kick off, I established the research team and I organized and monitored both the experimental and financial part of the project. At this moment, the project has been successfully gone through the mid-term monitoring/auditing.
